Medical, Laboratory and Industrial Air Systems
Medical Gas Resources supplies, installs and services compressed air systems for healthcare and laboratory facilities throughout Southern California. Whether you need an NFPA 99 medical air plant for a hospital, a dental air compressor for a growing practice, or clean, dry lab air for a research building, we help you size, select, install and maintain the right system.
Medical air systems (NFPA 99)
Medical air is a patient-breathing gas, so the source equipment has to meet NFPA 99 requirements for air quality, redundancy, alarms and controls. A typical medical air plant includes:
- Two or more compressors sized so the facility’s peak demand can be met with the largest unit out of service
- Oil-less compressor technology – scroll, oil-less rotary vane, claw or oil-free rotary screw – so lubricating oil can’t contaminate the air stream
- Desiccant dryers to hold dew point within limits, plus final particulate and activated-carbon filtration
- Dew point and carbon monoxide monitoring tied into the alarm system
- Receiver tank, lead/lag controls and a control panel that alternates units and brings on backup capacity automatically
We carry enclosed and open (base-mounted) medical scroll, rotary screw and medical dryer packages for hospitals, surgery centers and clinics.
Laboratory air systems
Laboratories need consistent, clean, dry air for instruments, fume hoods, pneumatic controls and bench outlets. Our laboratory scroll and laboratory rotary screw systems are packaged with the dryers and filters your application needs, without the full NFPA 99 medical requirements when they don’t apply.
Instrument air
Instrument air powers surgical tools, booms and other pneumatic equipment. It is not used for patient breathing, but it still needs to be oil-free, dry and filtered. We can package a dedicated instrument air system or tie it into your existing source equipment.
Dental and non-NFPA air
For dental offices, veterinary clinics and other facilities that don’t require a full medical air plant, we offer non-NFPA enclosed scroll and tank-mounted scroll compressors. They’re quiet, compact and oil-less, sized to the number of operatories or users.
Installation, maintenance and repair
We install new air plants and replace aging ones, and our factory-trained technicians maintain them on quarterly, semi-annual or annual schedules. We also repair existing compressors from Powerex, BeaconMedaes, Amico, Atlas Copco, Air Tech and other manufacturers. Need temporary air during a replacement? See medical air compressor rentals.
Air system FAQs
What is the difference between medical air and instrument air?
Medical air is breathable and is delivered to patients, so it has to meet NFPA 99 purity, dew point and monitoring requirements. Instrument air drives tools and equipment and is never used for breathing. Both should be oil-free, clean and dry.
Why do medical air compressors have to be oil-less?
Oil can carry over into the air stream and reach patients. NFPA 99 requires medical air compressors designed so oil can’t contaminate the air, which is why medical systems use scroll, oil-less vane, claw or oil-free screw technology.
How do I size a medical air system?
Sizing is based on the number and type of outlets, diversity factors for the facility type and future expansion. We can review your drawings or existing system and recommend a package.
