Every medical gas system has to stay safe, correctly labeled and within pressure, purity and alarm limits, both when it’s first installed and throughout its life. Medical Gas Resources helps hospitals, surgery centers, clinics, dental offices and labs in Southern California keep their systems compliant with NFPA 99 and ready for Joint Commission, CDPH and other surveys.

Medical gas testing and inspection services

  • System inspections – visual inspection of source equipment, manifolds, zone valves, alarms, outlets and labeling
  • Alarm testing – check that master, area and local alarms signal correctly for high/low pressure, vacuum, dew point, CO and source changeover
  • Pressure and vacuum checks – line pressures and vacuum levels at the source and at outlets
  • Outlet function checks – flow, latching, leak and gas-specific connection checks on wall outlets
  • Medical air quality checks – dew point and carbon monoxide monitoring and sensor calibration
  • Source equipment testing – compressors, vacuum pumps, dryers, lead/lag controls and automatic changeover manifolds
  • Deficiency repair – we fix failed outlets, leaking valves, faulty alarms and worn equipment found during testing

Verification for new and modified systems

NFPA 99 requires new or modified medical gas piping systems to be tested by the installer and then verified by a qualified, independent verifier before patient use. We do installer testing on our projects, coordinate with your verifier, and correct any findings so the system can go into service on schedule. Learn about our installation services.

Ongoing inspection and maintenance programs

Annual inspection and testing of medical gas components – combined with preventive maintenance of compressors, vacuum pumps and dryers – keeps a system reliable and gives your facilities team the documentation surveyors ask for. We offer quarterly, semi-annual and annual programs tailored to your system size and risk category. See our guide to medical gas preventive maintenance.

Who needs medical gas testing?

  • Hospitals and critical access facilities
  • Ambulatory surgery centers
  • Medical office buildings and clinics with piped gases or vacuum
  • Dental offices with nitrous oxide, oxygen, air or vacuum piping
  • Veterinary hospitals and laboratories

Medical gas testing FAQs

How often should medical gas systems be inspected?

NFPA 99 calls for periodic inspection and testing of medical gas components, alarms and source equipment, with intervals based on the facility’s risk assessment and manufacturer recommendations. Many facilities test outlets and alarms annually and service source equipment quarterly or semi-annually.

What’s the difference between testing and verification?

Installer testing is done by the contractor during and after installation (pressure, cross-connection, purging and similar tests). Verification is a separate, independent check by a qualified verifier before a new or modified system is used on patients.

What happens if a test fails?

We document the deficiency and can usually repair it on the spot or schedule the repair quickly, whether it’s an outlet, valve, alarm or source equipment issue.
